What were they thinking?

Those victims of the World Trade Center disaster who chose to leap to their deaths rather than be consumed by fire.

Did they imagine they had a greater chance of surviving the leap than surviving the inferno? What did they experience as they plummeted to earth? Did they see the flames, the smoke, the building they escaped from or the crystal-blue sky overhead?

Maybe they were focused on the ground that was rushing toward them.

I'm hoping they experienced the sensation of flight in those last moments.
