This painting was inspired by the Dutch painter Ton Schulten. I was attracted to the stark contrast evident in his painting, "In the Snow."

After contacting the artist, I received permission to create a quilt in the style of his painting -- an impressionistic, mosaic-like landscape. I used dark, and bright solid colored fabrics.

Each shape was cut free hand. The sky evokes a somber mood, whereas the village comes ot life usingbright orange of the houses, surrounded by abstract trees in contrasting colors.

The quilting lines and shapes emphasize what is expressed in Ton Shulten's work -- joy of life and optimism.
